![]() ![]() One fort on Sicily can protect the island and give you stackwipe-tier battles. One fort can protect the entire peninsula. Italian peninsula has mostly a 3-province or 2-province width and many mountain provinces. Likewise, access to Russia from Scandinavia can be blocked off in the other direction. One fort in Karelia and one in Zealand/Lund will block access to all of Scandinavia. Don't bother with areas that are hard to block off.(Extra cheese: Keep ships in dock until they start retreating - ships out, force a second battle) Stackwipe enemy by winning a battle on the right side of a crossing, or on an island, and blocking their escape with ships.Force the enemy to siege down your fortress if they want access to your heartlands.Cut off the enemy at any isthmus, crossing, peninsula, or wasteland.Bonus if it's on the coast so you can just land on their faces. Always with two provinces between each fort, always on -1 or -2 terrain if I can. I put forts on provinces with water crossing, and in 1-3 province wide chokepoints. This is what you have to consider when I say strategic flexibility determine if you need more forts based on how likely you are to be the target of your enemies. There will still be enemies sieging your forts if they have the numbers, but without those numbers an open ally without full ZoC borders will be the juciest target. As soon as they can't path to your whole country you become a lower priority. The AI focuses the person it thinks it can seperate peace based on specific factors and unknowing players that don't properly close holes in their ZoC will be that target. I used to have the community mentality that the AI just focuses the player, but it's not really true. This means that if you're playing a nation like PLC and are wondering why enemies will go out of their way to focus you when you never built more forts, it's because there's gaps in your forts that make 90% of your country pathable and so they think you are the easiest one to get warscore on and seperate peace. They were basically in persistent debt and had no armies during peace, but it saved me a lot of money giving them two level 4 forts.Īs for actual placement, to prevent the AI from focusing you during a war, you want to reduce the number of provinces they have access to. For example I recently vassalized Tibet in an Orissa campaign and built them two forts so I could use the defensive advantage against Ming's far superior numbers. I will occasionally build forts for them in defensive places that will benefit me. By that time my enemies are far away from their lands and they just need manpower to deal with attrition from walking across a continent. My vassals by endgame often don't need forts because they aren't in any real danger of occupations. I don't bother with territories unless I have a very specific reason to, such as west Africa to deal with neighbor rebels giving me seperatism occasionally. There are times when I build just one or two key forts(balanced approach betwen money and defense typically midgame), but by late game I always have a full defensive zone of control of my stated land. There are times when I delete forts for money(early game especially).
